We Head to Rome to See ‘The Boss’

This is one in a series of blog posts detailing our 10-county trip around Europe on trains, buses, cars and ferries. All the posts highlight what we got up to (hopefully without the boring bits) along with some tips and helpful overviews should you wish to visit the destinations. In this post, we move from Abruzzo in Italy to Rome. You can see all the posts from this trip here.

In our minds we had always had Rome as the end point of this trip around Europe, where we had tickets to see Bruce Springsteen – but it wasn’t really the endpoint as we, obviously, had to get back to the UK. One cannot stay in Europe forever now due to the post-Brexit Schengen situation. So, whilst in Abruzzo we planned the last legs of the journey home from Rome to the UK and at the same time met up with our daughter in time to go to Rome for the concert.

Before leaving Abruzzo we did, however, manage to watch the Giro D’Italia cycle race zipping through our town – blink and you’ll miss it!

On the day of the concert, which was a Sunday, we took a Prontobus from Abruzzo to Rome, as railway connections were few and far between. On arriving at Tibertina, the main bus station in Rome, we got a taxi to the apartment we had rented for the night, which was located about a mile walk away from the concert.

The Storm Passes Away at Circus Maximus

Like the previous few weeks, the weather on this day was very changeable. The sunshine of our arrival soon gave way to storm clouds and rain as we arrived at the venue for the gig, the Circus Maximus.

Minutes after we had cleared ticketing and security, the heavens opened up and a full-on deluge ensued. We were ready for it though, wearing walking boots, easily discarded layers and rain ponchos – not a good look for a rock concert, but it kept us reasonably dry.

By the time Bruce’s second warm-up act (the UK’s own Sam Fender), appeared on stage, the storm had all but passed, and there was a promise of good weather in the air.

Ciao Roma!

We had seen ‘The Boss’ many years ago in Rome (2013 Wrecking Ball Tour), but at a different venue then. Today, we were in the Circus Maximus, the ancient site of Roman chariot races. It is an elongated ovoid of ground flanked by the Aventine and Palatine hills, which of course, like much of Rome makes for a spectacular venue. I guess, because of its shape the concert toilets were a long, long way back from the stage, so if you ever attend a concert here be prepared for a long walk back or have a strong bladder!

Needless to say, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band were excellent, and delivered over 3 hours of classic music in a relaxed, and for a crowd of 60 thousand people an almost intimate atmosphere – and no more rain.

Getting to Rome

By Air: You can get to easily get to Rome by air from the UK, as well as via international flights across Europe. The two main airports are Fiumicino “Leonardo da Vinci” International Airport and Ciampino International Airport. I would recommend using Skyscanner to find flights into Rome, and, if you are flexible when you go/return then using the ‘search by month’ tool to find the most economical flights.

By Train: Rome is easily accessible by rail from the major towns of Italy, as well as the rest of Europe. Check out trains to Rome here.

By Bus: Rome is also easy to reach by bus, I would recommend Flixbus, which is a company based in Germany, but serves the vast majority of mainland Europe and offers cost-effective options to get to Rome and central Italy.

Rome: Getting to and From the Airport

If you decide to fly to Rome, here are a few simple options for getting into the city from the airports depending on your budget. They are:

Book an airport-to-city bus: Terravision buses leave both airports at regular intervals and will take you straight to the centre of Rome in about 40-45 minutes This service operates at regular intervals and tickets can be bought at the airport or online.

Take a taxi: Taxis will be found outside the arrivals hall. The journey time to the centre of Rome is usually 40 minutes from Fiumicino Airport depending on traffic (Ciampino Airport is closer to the centre so is usually quicker). Always use official taxis and it is wise to confirm the fare in advance with the driver.

Take the train: From Fiumicino Airport only you can take the Leonardo Express train into the centre, it’s a few minutes faster than the buses, but is around twice the price.

Hire a car: Of course, if you want the flexibility of your own transport, then you will find the usual raft of car rental counters in the arrivals hall, or you can book in advance online. The airport is well-connected to the Italian road network, so you can soon be on your way to your onward destination.

Getting Around Rome

There are many options for getting around the capital of Italy, depending on your fitness level and budget. The public transport systems are safe and efficient.

Note that Rome has an integrated ticketing system which means that a single ticket can be valid for multiple types of transport within the city(including Metro, trams and buses). You can purchase tickets at the vending machines in any metro station, convenience store or newsagents. Note, that you will generally have to validate your ticket with the metro, bus, or tram machine on your first form of transport – don’t risk a fine. For more info see here.

Walk: Rome’s city centre is relatively compact with many of the main tourist attractions within walking distance of each other – ideal for strolling around.

The Metro: Rome currently has a network of just three lines (a fourth is on the way), making it one of the smallest in Europe, and in our opinion, it also makes it one of the easiest to use and offers an efficient way to explore the city. The Metro runs from 5:30 am to 11:30 pm, but on Friday and Saturday, the Metro runs until 1:30 am.

By Bus: Rome has an extensive bus network for reaching the far-flung areas of the city, which you can’t always get to by the metro.

By Taxi: If you are feeling flush, then a taxi offers an alternative to public transport, but it can be expensive – Rome’s taxis are probably amongst the most expensive in Europe. You can hail or find them at one of the city’s designated taxi stands. All taxis in Rome are white, with a taxi roof sign, the company telephone number on the side and a taximeter visible at the front of the car. Rome taxi drivers have a bad reputation, check how much you are likely to pay for your ride before getting in the taxi – so there are no surprises. Uber is now also available in Rome.

By Tram: Rome has six small lines, but they don’t service the city centre very well.

Where to stay in Rome

Here are a few accommodation options we’ve previously used and been very happy with in Rome.

A couple of hotels we like are the excellent Crowne Plaza situated away from the hustle and bustle of the centre but close to the Vatican and the Occidental Aurelia, which is a nice hotel with lovely staff but situated away from the centre (so you’d need to get a bus or the Metro into the centre).

If staying closer to the centre is more your thing then a couple we’ve used are the Dream Station, clean and basic but very handy for Termini Station, or the

Campo De Fiori Relais where we stayed for the Springsteen gig.

The Top 10 Free Things to See and Do in Rome

Rome is a city rich with history, culture, and breathtaking architecture, it also can be a little pricey when you add up all those cappuccinos, so here are our top 10 things to see and do in the eternal city for free.

St. Peter’s Basilica: Located in Vatican City, St. Peter’s Basilica is an architectural marvel. Visitors can explore the stunning interior, admire Michelangelo’s Pietà, and view the impressive altar for free. Get there early though to beat the crowds, as the entrance queue can almost be as impressive as the Basilica itself.

Unique Places to Visit in Italy: Our Top 10 Favourites

The world, as we all know, has changed in recent years and so has tourism, many people no longer feel comfortable joining the throngs of holidaymakers that have previously swamped the Italian hotspots on the streets of Venice, Florence and Rome. Many travellers now want to leave the crowds behind and find the more unique places to visit in Italy that the majority of tourists have not yet discovered. Italy like all the countries of the world have these in abundance, so lets seek out some of the unique places to visit in Italy.

Although a few of the places mentioned here are not often on the ‘usual’ tourists itinerary, some do get busy in the summer months such as Tropea and, now Matera (partially thanks to a recent James Bond movie ‘No Time to Die’ filming there), so it might be prudent to visit these places out of the ‘high’ seasons to avoid the crowds.

Hidden gems of Italy North of Rome: Unique Places to Visit in Italy

Trento
The capital of the Trentino–Alto Adige region, Trento offers a plethora of Italian cultural delights without the crowds, so making it perfect destination for a weekend visit. Without the grime, dust and crowds of many of the tourist cities of Italy, Trento’s cobbled streets offer a great opportunity to explore this little-known jewel of a town, with its many galleries, outside frescoes, beautiful main piazza and impressive cathedral. You can also take in a visit to the equally impressive Buonconsiglio Castle. All in all a town with a lot to offer mixed in with a laid back vibe.
Camogli, Liguria
This former fishing town is a secret alternative to its more touristy neighbours of Porto Fino and Cinque Terre on the Italian Riviera, with its colourful houses and relaxed atmosphere. Situated in the Golfo Paradiso, on the Riviera di Levante It retains the feel of its fishing heritage, but still has all the necessities for the discerning visitor, including numerous excellent seafood restaurants and the impressive Cenobio Dei Dogi hotel, which although a little pricey could add some ’old world’ glamour to your stay.
Valsugana (or the Sugana valley), Trentino
Alpine forests, mountains and numerous crystal clear lakes that pepper this region offer a wide range of activities to suite the most discerning of out-door types. Activities in this area are focused in the hills and lakes, and include climbing, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, sailing, windsurfing along with Spa retreats (such as in Levico). The region’s major lakes are Lake Levico and Lake Caldonazzo, and these tend to be the man focus of water sports in the area.
Mantua (Mantova in Italian), Lombardy
This is a another great city, just stuffed to the gills with art and architectural wonders – when you visit, you’ll want to keep it your own special secret, because hordes of tourists who would surely descend if they knew how great it was. Encrusted like a diamond brooch the city is surrounded on three sides by pretty emerald lakes. The town itself is dominated by grand architecture, including the Ducal Palce which boosts over 600 rooms, adored with beautiful frescos and great art, which might even have the Vatican jealously looking over its shoulder.
Also worth visits while here are the Teatro Bibliena, where a few weeks after it official opening December 1769 a 13 year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart played to rapturous applause, and the Te Palace (nestled in the suburbs), both hidden gems within this hidden gem. Also while here remember to partake of some Lambrusco which is produced here and in the nearby region of Emilia Romagna.
Gardens of Bomarzo: the Park of Monsters
The Gardens of Bomarzo, located in northern Lazio also known as the Sacred Wood and more locally as The Park of Monsters due to the abundance of statues and carvings of mythical creatures that inhabit the park. Created in the 16^th century in a wooded valley bottom directly beneath the castle of Orsini, the forested park covers 3-hectares and features many buildings inspired by classical architecture but with a bizarre twist, such as the Leaning House, which warps the rules of perspective and disorients your senses. The park is a perfect location If you want to spend a day in nature while losing yourself in a amazing labyrinth of ancient surprises.
Orta San Giulio, Piedmont
Located on the shores of Lake Orta, the colourful town of Orta San Giulio certainly sparkles as one of the prettiest gems in Piedmont. With it relaxed atmosphere it is the perfect place to take an aperitivo in in one of the cool café bars dotted around the piazzas and gardens, then later take a stroll up to the lake front to watch the lights appear on the nearby island of San Giulio as the sun descends.

Getting to Italy

By Air: You can get to all the main Italian airports easily from the UK, plus other locations within Europe as well as international flights across the globe. I would recommend using Skyscanner to find flights into Italy and if you are flexible when you go/return use the ‘search by month’ tool to find the most economical flights.

By Train: Access to Italy is also easy by train from many European hubs, and also much more eco-friendly than flying, certainly an option if you have the time. Check out trains to Italy here.

By Bus: Of course, you can also reach Italy by bus, but I wouldn’t recommend it for very long transits unless of course you are a tight budget (as it is usually the cheapest option). I would recommend Flixbus, which is a company based in Germany, but serves the vast majority of mainland Europe including Italy.

Hidden gems of Italy South of Rome: Unique Places to Visit in Italy

Tropea, Calabria
Calabria, much like its mirror region of Puglia on the other side Italian peninsula, is a land of azure waters and sandy beaches and offers great value when compared to the tourist hotspots of Rome and Florence etc. (like most of the South of Italy). It can get busy though, especially in the peak of summer when it attracts Italian tourists from all over Italy, so book accommodation early if you plan to visit in peak season. It’s a great town, featuring the famous Santa dell’Islo church, which perches on a great rock and overlooks the beach. The 12th-century cathedral and fortified old town further add to the spender of this lovely spot.
Martina Franca, Puglia
A little Puglian gem, this town is a few minutes down the road from Alberobello (famous for its conical ‘Trulli’ houses), but with far fewer tourists. It is a labyrinth of brilliant white buildings, pretty piazzas and little restaurants. This Baroque hilltop town makes a good base for exploring the area.
Castelmezzano, Basilicata
This stunning Italian gem, nestled 900 metres above sea level in the peaks of the Dolmiti Lucane is certainly worth the trip if you are visiting the little-known region of Basilicata. Visually stunning, the area around the town offers many walks and trails for the avid hiker, and for adrenaline junkies there is a high-speed zip line, called Il Volo dell’Angelo (The Angel Flight) that connects it to the nearby village of Pietrapertosa.
Matera, Basilicata
Matera, after being awarded a European Capital of Culture in 2019, is a little more well-know now than some of it’s contemporaries on this list, it is, however still worth a visit. This ancient settlement once consisted almost entirely of cave-like dwellings carved into the rock known as the Sassi (in the oldest part of the town), but the story of Matera is one blighted by disease and poverty to such an extent that the town’s population was evacuated in 1952 and the Sassi were abandoned until the 1980s. Since then the town has benefited from investment and is now a beautiful historical highlight of any visit to this area. Beware, although the old cave dwellings were some of the poorest in Italy, the new resurgence of this town now means that accommodation in the town can be priced high, especially if you want to stay in one of the former cave dwellings.
I hope our selection has whet your appetite for exploring the less touristy areas of Italy, but visit soon as they won’t stay off the tourist radar too long.

Getting around Italy

There are lots of transport options when seeking out the unique places to visit in Italy, but how you decide to travel depends on where you want to go, what you want to see and how difficult some places might be to reach from your entry point (such as one of the main airports).

Here are all the main options.

By Bus: Italy’s regional bus services are generally reliable and timely, and using local services will allow you to get to some of the more out of the way places on our list. However, they can be slow and you could need to change several times. Flixbus also offer many routes across Italy to major towns so these are also worth considering.

By Train: The train network in Italy is extensive, usually on time and fast, especially between the major hubs. The issue with trying to do everything on the trains in Italy, is that it may be more difficult to get to the more out of the way places. So you may need to combine bus and train if you want to get around using public transport.

Rent a car: This is your most flexible option if you want to explore further afield. Obviously driving will allow you to get to all the places on our list on your own schedule. AutoEurope are our first port of call when looking for car rental in Italy.

The Split to Italy Ferry – Grand European Tour Part 13

We Take to the Waves on the Split to Italy Ferry

This is one of a series of blog posts detailing our 10-county trip around Europe on trains, buses, automobiles and ferries. All the posts highlight what we got up to (hopefully without the dull bits!). Along with some tips and helpful overviews should you wish to visit the destinations. In this episode, we take the Split to Italy ferry. You can see all the posts from this trip here.

On arriving at Split, we made our way to our overnight accommodation, this time in the south end of the town, a little away from the sea and less touristy. It was a bit of a walk, but it always seems further away when you don’t really know where you are heading. I really can’t remember what we did before we had Google Maps. After stocking up on a few essentials and settling into our digs. We headed off to find a restaurant, most of which are inevitably toward the sea. Although we had only previously stayed in Split for a couple of days on this trip, we oddly felt very at home immediately even though it was a completely different part of the town we were exploring.

If You Visit Split, Eat Here!

As luck would have it, and guided by some good reviews on Trip Advisor we found a great restaurant, the Nevera Tavern – great staff, wonderful atmosphere and fantastic food. If you like fish you cannot go wrong here. Our only regret is that we didn’t have the obvious speciality of the house, a mixed fish banquet that arrived in a steaming cauldron and required ‘grown up’ bibs to enjoy in all its glory. We had serious food envy that night, and if we get the chance to return there that’s what we will be ordering.

More Eating!

The following day, we dropped our cases off at a left-luggage depot at the ferry port, to free us for a leisurely day in Split exploring more of the old town and the market, and having a very good lunch at the small and usually busy MakaMaka Accai and Poke Bar (very tasty food at reasonable prices – great if you are into poke bowls).

Heading back down to the port, we had a final coffee in Split, picked up our luggage and headed for the ferry.

All Aboard The Split to Italy Ferry

This was our first time on a trans-Adriatic ferry and we were travelling with SNAV lines on the Moby Zaza. If you read the online reviews for this company’s trans-Adriatic ferries you’d probably believe that you were going to be thrown into some dingy hold, chained to your fellow passengers or encouraged to row across the waves by some whip-cracking barbarian insisting we sing out-of-tune sea shanties all the way – okay, I’m exaggerating. The reviews currently are poor, but this wasn’t our experience – this ferry was like most ferries – a bus of the sea to get you from A to B (or in our case Split to Ancona). The ferry was clean, the staff were all friendly, courteous and competent. Absolutely nothing to complain about. I think maybe some of the negative reviews were comparing this ferry experience with that of a ‘cruise ship’ experience. Ferries are not cruises. Our experience on this ferry was not so different from the ferries that plough across the North Sea or the Channel.

We Land in Italy in The Rain

We disembarked the Spilt to Italy ferry the next morning at Ancona, relatively refreshed (but I think I’m getting too old for bunk beds!), and we were met by cold and insistent rain. We quickly picked up a taxi at the port to take us to the railway station (it was too far to walk, even on a good day and this was not a good day, weather-wise).

It was still early, so we killed a little time with a couple of cappuccinos at a café -bar across from the station until our train was due. Unfortunately, halfway through the frothy bit, I received a text message from Trenitalia (the national Italian train company), that our had been cancelled due to critical weather conditions.

Note: In Italy, especially on the popular or high-speed routes we were required to make seat reservations on specific train journeys – hence the notification. So, finishing our coffee we headed back to the station, to work out our options.

Back On The Tracks

On arriving at the station it was pretty obvious that the adverse and unusual weather was having a knock-on effect for most of the services from the North (we didn’t realise how bad things had been and continued to be until we saw the news a few days later). After a few minutes of intense deliberation (in Yorkshire we usually refer to this as ‘Uming and Arring’), we decided to take the next train heading towards Ascola Picino (which is about halfway to Pescara, where we would need to change trains and Ancona).

This route would at least get us heading south, and as we needed to stay on the coast so decided we could get off at Porto d’Ascoli (on the coast), grab some lunch and then pick up another train, heading south to Pescara. Good plan. So fingers crossed we hopped aboard – the great thing about the interrail pass we had, is that it allows you to be very flexible and change your plans at a moment’s notice – very useful.

An hour and a half later we were in Porto d’Ascoli – it was still pouring down with rain.

We’d planned a quick 2-hour stop at Porto d’Ascoli, and very few things are quite as dreary as an out-of-season coastal town in the rain, and boy, was it raining.

After a quick search for somewhere reasonably close by to get lunch (via a bit of random Googling), we headed off at a quick pace to a bar/restaurant we hoped would be open and serving food.

We Find Shelter From The Storm

A few minutes later we arrived at the Savior Faire Di Quinzi, drenched and in need of shelter, food and some warm Italian hospitality – this little bar did not disappoint.

On entering the bar, we garnered a few curious looks from some of the locals, as they probably weren’t used to soaking wet tourists descending on them, at least before the summer season started, but we were soon making friends, especially with the bar owner Giorgio, who went out of his way to make us feel very welcome.

Giorgio soon had us settled in the restaurant area of the bar with coffee, and assured us that we could eat there (a little earlier than normal to ensure we got back to the station on time). Giorgio was the perfect host, very friendly, and we were lucky to bump into him on our first day in Italy.

Lunch was delicious (carbonara for me and ravioli for Mrs A) and arrived on time, so we didn’t need to rush it. Then it was some quick goodbyes, and back off to the railway station. Thankfully, by then, the rain had eased.

We will certainly return to Porto d’Ascoli in the not-too-distant future and will be sure to pop in and see Giorgio at the Savior Faire Di Quinzi.

The rest of the day’s train journey was fairly uneventful (and rather wet) as we headed into the beautiful region of Abruzzo.

10 Tips for Taking the Split to Italy Ferry

Book in Advance: As with all forms of popular public transport, it is always best to book in advance, the Split to Italy ferry is no exception. Here are a few tips when visiting a beach in Abruzzo, or Italy in general.

Clean beaches: In Italy during the summer season you’ll generally find the beaches very, very clean, especially in the larger resorts.

Two types of beaches: Many of the beaches in Italy are private (stabilimenti) and essentially an extension of a beach bar or a beachside hotel, with neat rows of beach beds and beach parasols lined up in colour-coded rows. If the beach is not ‘attached’ to a hotel or bar, then it is probably a public beach, which are easily recognisable as there are no neat rows of parasols on them and everyone using them will either be sun-worshippers with no shade at all or will have brought their own parasols, beach beds etc.

Costs: Public beaches, as above, you will see dotted everywhere in Abruzzo amongst the private (hotel/bar) beaches. There is no cost for using the public beaches, but remember the public beaches have no facilities.

On the other hand, you have to pay to use the private (bar/hotel) beaches. If you are from the UK this can be a bit of a shock (but try not to let it show).

The costs of ‘renting’ space on private beaches vary, depending on how popular the beach is, what time in the season it is, where your parasol is going to be located and indeed what time of day it is. Sounds complicated, but it’s not.

For example, let’s say you are a couple and you turn up at one of the beach bars dotted along the coast near Pescara/Francavilla.

Just asked one of the staff how much it costs to hire an umbrella and sunbeds (the standard charge is usually for one parasol and two sunbeds/chairs). If you like the price then, pay your money and a staff member will generally show you to your place on the beach. If you don’t like the price, you’ve got a couple of options, you can go try another bar/hotel – their prices may be cheaper. Or, you may be able to negotiate a better price especially if it is towards the end of the season, and the beaches aren’t full, or if you just want to stay on the beach for half the day just ask for a half day.

Note: In the height of summer during the Italian holidays, the main resorts will all be very busy, and you may have trouble finding a spot on the private beaches so don’t try and negotiate then as it won’t work.

Facilities: Private beaches offer all the facilities you would expect toilets, changing cubicles, showers, a bar and usually snacks and food, and their patch of beach is usually pristine – that is what you are paying for. They often have a lifeguard too. It is worth the price.

Mistakes we’ve made: We’ve spent some time on beaches in Italy, and the first error we made was not asking for a better price when we could have done (ie at the end of the season).

Another mistake we made on our first visit to the beach was just plonking down on a couple of beach beds under a parasol and thinking that someone would come along from the bar and charge us for them, as sometimes happens in other countries around the Med. However we failed to notice the little ticket fluttering under the parasol with a name on it, and we were soon very apologetically informed that this particular parasol /sunbed combo was rented for the entire season by an Italian family (a season pass), and they could turn up any minute. This occurs a lot in the larger and busier resorts. We swallowed our mild embarrassment and allowed ourselves to be shuffled to another area.

Italian Train Companies

There are two national rail companies operating in Italy, plus a few regional ones.

Formed in the year 2000, the primary national railway company is Trenitalia which is government owned and operates regional trains, plus the faster EuroCity, InterCity, FrecciaBianca (white arrows), FrecciaRossa (red arrows), and FrecciaArgento (silver arrows) trains. Note that for all the faster trains named above you will need to make a reservation, and this will need to be for a specific train and a specific seat.

The other main company is the privately owned Italo, which includes serving the major northern cities of Milan, Turin, Bologna, Florence, and Venice, along with lines stretching down to Bari and Naples. At the last count Italo reaches 51 cities and 59 stations throughout Italy. If using Italo, definitely book your tickets in advance for the best prices, but compare them with Trenitalia before purchasing to ensure you get the best deal. Italo is improving its services all the time, its latest route (at the time of writing) is a non-stop service from Milan to Rome taking a mere 3 hours 10 minutes – Trenitalia also do this route – so check both options to get the best price.

High-Speed Trains in Italy

Many years ago, Italy had a poor reputation when it came to its railway network; however, due to very significant investment over recent years, the infrastructure now supports several high-speed train routes that often enable you to travel between major Italian cities faster than you would be able to via plane. Also, you can now book tickets for high-speed trains online in advance, usually for a very reasonable price. This is a great way to get between the major tourist hubs while avoiding the hassle of sitting in a traffic jam or waiting in line at an airport.

Italy is a stretched-out country, so if you are planning a long journey such as Rome to Sicily, then it might be worth considering a sleeper train, which is both secure and comfortable and helps you save on flight and/or accommodation costs.

Using Local Italian Trains

The local train network has a large number of branch lines enabling you to get to most places you might need to go. Obviously, by definition, this is a slower way to travel than the high-speed trains, but your choice of potential destinations expands greatly and these services are usually inexpensive. They are also a great way to explore the smaller Italian town and countryside.

All trains will generally deliver you right into the centre of your destination town. A few exceptions might be some of the hill towns where the gradient might be too steep. In these instances, a bus service will often connect you with the town centre, as is currently the case in Sienna and Perugia.

Note that you cannot always prebook a seat with local trains, so in very busy periods you might end up standing for a while.

How to Buy Tickets For Italian Trains

For local trains, you can generally buy your ticket at the station, using the counter or more likely the self-service machines on the platform or in the main foyer.

Regional train tickets bought in the station often have an open validity and no reservations, and so they will need to be validated to confirm when they’ll be used so they can’t be used over and over again. You must ensure that you validate your ticket using one of the self-service machines that are on the platforms before you get on the train (this prints a date and time stamp on the ticket). The validation machines are usually yellow (the old versions) or green and white (the newer versions). Failing to validate your ticket before boarding your train could result in a hefty fine, so please remember to do it.

A reserved ticket, whether bought online or at the station doesn’t generally need to be validated prior to boarding the train.

For all Italian trains including high-speed services, you can book your tickets through online via RailEurope which will always show the best options regardless of train company operates the service. The other option is to go direct to Trenitalia or Italo’s website or app. Of course, you can always buy them directly at the station (at the counter or ticket machine).

Tips for Italian Trains

If you book on the Trenitalia website, it will tend to show the more expensive (often the fastest) journeys first. When the screen pops up detailing the fares for your required journey, click on the ‘Regional Trains’ box and it will usually show you the cheapest fares. Just something to be aware of. The last time I checked, the ‘Regional Trains’ box wasn’t appearing on the Trenitalia app, so stick to the website version to do this.

More Tips for Using Trains in Italy

You can do a similar thing if you are buying your ticket from a ticket machine in the station. Look for the button marked ‘Show all connections,’ and it will do exactly that, allowing you to take the cheapest routes if you don’t mind a few changes.

Using the Metro Systems Within the Major Italian Cities

Unsurprisingly, Rome and Milan have the largest metro systems in Italy, but Naples, Genoa, and Turin also boast underground railway systems.

The metro systems in all these cities are cheap and easy to use and navigate, especially if you are used to the London Underground; you will find getting around Rome a breeze.

Buses and trams are often integrated into these urban transport systems and, in most cities, you will be able to purchase one ticket that can be used on the different types of transport. Take care—as like the trains, you will often have to validate your ticket prior to use – on most town buses the validation machine is usually on the bus. Traditionally tickets for local buses can be bought at nearby tabacco (tabaccheria) shops, which often indicated by a big ‘T’ hanging outside the door, but the trend seems to be going that you can sometimes buy tickets on the actual buses themselves, especially in the major towns, and of course sometimes you may be able to using contactless (post Covid), but don’t count on it.

Good to Know

It is worth noting that all public transport in Italy including many Italian trains tend to run fewer services on Sundays, public holidays, and saints’ days, so bear this in mind when planning your travel itinerary.

Be aware that train stations are often crowded and so can prove profitable hunting grounds for pickpockets, especially in the larger tourist hotspots, so be sure to keep your valuables safe and secure.

Note that larger cities such as Rome or Milan may have more than one railway station, so if you are going to the centre, make sure you purchase a ticket that takes you to the correct station. Often, the main station is the name of the town followed by the word ‘centrale’ (central)—an example would be ‘Napoli Centrale’—but this is not always the case.

Festivals in Puglia – Italy

Puglia, the land of the marvellous Trulli (traditional, dry stone dwellings with conical roofs), like all of Italy, loves festivals, and in Puglia, there is a whole range of festivals taking place every single year. This article gives you the specifics on some of the festivals in Puglia by month and location. Dates and locations are approximate, so always confirm dates and timings with the local tourist office before you make firm plans.

Due to Puglia’s great climate, the majority of festivals are outdoor proceedings and take place in the warm Summer months, and often focus on the twin Italian passions of food and religion.

Festivals in Puglia

January

Lecce – Puccia dell’Ampa Festival: In mid-January, the attractive town of Lecce takes an entire weekend to celebrate ‘Puccia dell’Ampa’, which is local wood baked bread, often stuffed with aged ricotta or pickles. An excellent event for all the foodies out there.

Putignano –Carnivale di Putignano: This is said to be one of the oldest carnivals in the world, this annual event is nothing short of spectacular, featuring processions of elaborate, allegorical floats featuring an array of over-the-top characters such as priests, nuns, widows, madmen and cuckolds. The festival officially starts on the 26^th of December (but really gets into gear from January 17^th, with the feast of Sant’Antonio Abate, and finishes on Shove Tuesday.

Celenza Valfortore – Fest della Pignata: Puglia has a well-deserved reputation for being the best in seafood and this particular festival is dedicated to the eight-limbed mollusc – the octopus.

March/April

Easter is a massive celebration throughout the whole of the Italian peninsula, and this is equally true for the festivals in Puglia:

San Marco – “Fracchie” Procession: Taking place on Good Friday, the town of San Marco in the north of Puglia plays host to the ‘Fracchie’ procession, where the townsfolk split cone-shaped tree trunks in two and stuff them with kindling, splinters and dry branches, and turn them into enormous, fiery torches for a spectacular procession through the town and to illuminate the path of the Madonna.

There are too many festivals celebrating Easter in the Puglia region to mention here, so if you do find yourself in this part of the world over the Easter period, be sure to check in with the local tourist office to see what other festivals are happening locally.

Alongside the religious Easter celebrations, there are many other festivals in the region over this period including the ones below:

Vieste – Festival of San Giorgio: This festival celebrates the humble ‘frittato’, which is an omelette a little similar to the Spanish tortilla.

Alberobello – Sagra dei Tarallucci e Vino: This festival, which usually takes place in late April, celebrates the traditional ‘taralli’, ring-shaped biscuits – in either sweet or savoury variants and taken with wine.

Where to stay in Puglia

Puglia (aka Apuglia) is a diverse and geographically long region, so there are many options for staying in the area.

If you want to be near the beach, then the Hotel Sirena located near Peschici is a good option.

Or if you head South, then the Signuria Dimora Esclusiva which is in the provincial capital of Lecce could be a great base.

Summer: The Busiest Time For Festivals in Puglia

May

Bari – Festa di San Nicola: This festival is in honour of Bari’s patron saint (who also happens to be the patron saint of sailors). This very popular event is one of the key festivals in Puglia and draws visitors from around the world with flotillas of boats, parades and of course, the obligatory fireworks.

Ortranto – Truffle Festival: Yet another food festival, this time the focus is on that pungent, expensive and hard-to-find delicacy, the truffle. No sniffer dogs (or pigs) are required for this festival, as the streets will have plenty of stalls dedicated to this delicacy.

Leverano, Conversano, Turi and many other towns – Sagra della Ciliegia Ferrovia Festivals: Taking place in many towns throughout Puglia in May and into June, the region celebrates the wonders of the unassuming cherry. The town of Turi is the epicentre of this Cherry-Fest, as it is home to the most cultivated cherry in Italy, known as the ‘Railway Cherry’ due to it being originally found growing close to the railway tracks heading south-east towards Sammichele di Bari.

Getting to Puglia

Fly: At the last look at flights started from £20 from destinations including the UK to the main airport in Puglia – Bari (also known as Karol Wojtyła Airport), although not all flights are direct. We generally check with Skyscanner for flights and if you are flexible with your travel dates, use the ‘search by month tool’ to find the cheapest flights.

Train: Train connections, like the rest of Italy, are generally good, especially between the major hubs. However getting to the smaller, out-of-the-way towns may not always be possible on trains. Use Rail Europe to search for trains in Puglia and Italy.

Bus: The Flixbus service covers the main towns and also can get you from/return you to the main hubs of Bari and Brindisi. Otherwise, the local bus services are also very good and inexpensive.

How to get around Puglia

Puglia is a very long, thin region, so we often find the best way to travel is by car, especially if you want to catch some festivals in Puglia. That way you have the option of travelling to the less well-known spots in Puglia such as appear in this guide. If we hire a car we tend to use AutoEurope as our first choice as this website compares car rentals across Europe and further afield.If you planning to visit the main towns then local buses or trains as above will generally suffice.

June

Brindisi – Negroamaro Wine Festival: Usually taking place in the first half of June (but it does vary, so check with the tourist board), this festival celebrates with streets lined with wine tasting stations (of course), street food and live music and dancing.

Otranto – Festa San Pietro e Paolo: Featuring a series of events based around food (of course) and folklore, this festival combines fun and culture with great local food, and usually takes place towards the end of June.

July

Crispiano – Carnevale del Brigantino: The Carnival of the Brigantino, takes place at the end of July (check locally for exact dates). This festival features a masked procession that winds through the streets of the town, along with wine(of course), music art and local delicacies such as liver, sausage, snails and bread.

August

Felline – Sagra della Polpetta: This festival focuses on one of my Italian food favourites – Polpette! (also known as meatballs).

Sannicandro di Bari – Orecchiette: This small town pays tribute to the local Orecchiette pasta (literally ‘little ears’ because, well, that’s what they look like).

Melpignano – Taranta Festival: Involving around 15 towns of the Lecce province this month-long festival of dance culminates with a grand finale in the town of Melpignano. Featuring late-night dancing in the streets and piazzas until into the early hours celebrating the region’s unique folk music and dance known as the “tarantella” or “pizzica”, whose origins are centuries old, and believed to date from pagan times. One of the best-known festivals in Puglia.

Bari – Sammichele: The port town of Bari celebrates its local sausage speciality in this festival, culminating in a great feast with mozzarella and plenty of vino rosso.

Muro Leccese and Ortelle – Maisle Celibrations: Both these towns celebrate roast pork (maiale), a traditional dish for many generations, now used to create speciality dishes in many Puglian restaurants.
